Petition after Bitterne Road West crash in Southampton

The three-car collision on Thursday - which saw a front garden wall destroyed - has pushed the community to “breaking point”.

Writing on change.org, the person who set up the petition said: “We do need immediate action, whether it’s installing average speed cameras and more 30mph signs.

“My family, neighbours, and I regularly face abuse from speeding drivers as we try to safely exit our driveways, take children to school, or even cross the street.

“Last Thursday['s] horrific crash has pushed our community to the breaking point. We cannot wait for a fatal accident to occur before something is done.”

The petition page, which has around 232 signatures, lists six road traffic incidents as examples of why change has to happen, three of which have taken place in 2024.

There is already a speed camera at the traffic lights where the road splits to Maybray King Way, but residents say it is not a deterrent as drivers can slow down as they approach the hill.

A 27-year-old Bitterne Road West resident, who wished to be unnamed, said: “I don’t think average speed cameras are the only solution but something really has to be done.

“I don’t want to keep living in fear that something might come through my window every time I hear a lorry drive past.”

The lead petitioner added: "This road and this area is home to schools, families, and elderly residents, and it’s only a matter of time before tragedy strikes.

"Some may suggest, 'just move,' but not everyone has that luxury. Factors like life circumstances and affordability often dictate where we live.

The petition page lists Southampton City Council, UK Road Safety Observatory and the UK Department for Transport as the decision makers that could bring change for the community.

Bitterne Park councillor Amanda Barnes-Andrew previously said while there is already a speed camera on the road, she has asked for extra traffic calming measures to be considered.
