Bosses at a theatre planning to introduce price hikes which community groups say could put them out of business have launched a public consultation.

Several of the amateur theatre companies using The Point for their shows said they would have struggled to survive if proposed changes had been rubber-stamped by Eastleigh Borough Council last week.

But, following an overwhelming response to the plans, a two-week survey, launching today, will allow everyone to have their say.

The launch of the survey, which runs until Tuesday October 15, follows a consultation meeting for groups last night.

Marketing manager Emilie Barton told the Daily Echo that staff are working extremely hard to ensure the doors of The Point stay open for the community to use and thrive in.

She added: "We understand that increasing hire fees may be a concern for our community groups and non-commercial hirers.

"However, the rising costs of running The Point, such as utilities, maintenance, and staffing, mean that we need to make adjustments to ensure the theatre remains financially sustainable.

"We encourage people to take part in our public consultation. Your responses will help us understand how these changes might impact our users and ensure that we consider all viewpoints.

"These changes will help us cover the real costs of operating this important community venue and prevent The Point from having to reduce services or, in the worst case, close its doors.

"Our aim is to continue providing a high-quality space for local groups, while also ensuring that The Point can thrive in the future."

Members say they are also concerned at moves to encourage community groups to use the council's Berry Theatre, at Wildern School in Hedge End, which they say is unsuitable for large casts and without sufficient public transport links.
