The Tony award-winning actor and creator of Hamilton has backed plans for the redevelopment of Southampton's Mayflower Theatre.

Speaking to the Daily Echo, Hollywood and Broadway star Lin-Manuel Miranda threw his support behind plans to extend the Mayflower Theatre, ahead of his smash hit musical debuting in Southampton next year.

Bosses at the theatre hope to build a new rehearsal studio, dressing rooms and a stage door as part of the scheme.

Commenting on the plans, Lin-Manuel said: “I think it’s great, the Covid-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns are barely in the rear-view mirror for me.

“I remember when all theatres in the world had stopped, and I vowed never to take it for granted that we can gather in the dark and tell stories.

"There’s nothing like getting in a room full of people of absolute strangers, grabbing a drink, sitting down, and being transported by a group of incredible artists who agree to tell you a story.

“The fact we still agree to put our phones away and tell stories to each other is incredibly remarkable, whether that is in a modernised theatre like in Southampton or in a 100-seat hall.”

In April, the Mayflower Theatre submitted plans to build a brand-new double-height rehearsal studio, two fully accessible dressing rooms, a stage door and reception.

Lin-Manuel Miranda (Image: Supplied) Southampton City Council approved the theatre’s proposals in July, after chief executive and creative director, Michael Ockwell said it was the Mayflower’s ambition to “attract the best shows and performances which is matched by our drive towards delivering inspiring experiences for all,” as well as ensuring the Grade II-listed building was net-zero compliant.

Playing at the Mayflower Theatre for the first time, Hamilton will run for six weeks in Southampton as part of it’s 2025 UK tour from March 18 to April 26, telling the story of America’s Founding Father, Alexander Hamilton.

Lin-Manuel added: “I’m thrilled Hamilton is going to be in Southampton next year.

“It’s so extraordinary to see how the world beyond the United States has embraced this show.”
