A community radio station that has been on Southampton airwaves for nearly two decades has closed.

Skyline Gold, which was based in Hedge End for several years, came off air for good on September 6.

Announcing the news, the team said: “After nearly 20 years on air, our funds, as we are a mainly voluntary group are now unfortunately insufficient to continue under the current circumstances.

“It’s been great to be on the FM airwaves and DAB across the southern parishes and South Hampshire for so long, bringing you the best music and some of the finest programming you will find on your radio.

“All of us at Skyline have been really grateful for your warm messages and strong support shown by you, our listeners, across the years.

“We hope that you have enjoyed listening again to truly local radio.”

The team added that other options are being considered for the future.

The station thanked listeners, presenters, and advertisers who supported Skyline Gold over its 17-year tenure.

The announcement comes nearly a year after the station was ousted from its home of 16 years.

Skyline Gold operated from the Old School House in St John's Road in Hedge End since 2007 for free.

But in May of last year, the town council told the group that they would need to pay them £3,600 a year to stay there.

A new home was found for the station in Botley.
