Southampton City Council has joined calls for the government to step in and save council homes.

On Tuesday a cross-party coalition of over 100 council landlords warned the government that England’s council housing system is broken at an event in Westminster.

Led by Southwark Council, the coalition has said that urgent action is needed for the government to deliver its housing promises.

The coalition’s report explains how an unsustainable financial model and erratic national policy changes have squeezed council housing budgets and sent costs soaring.

New analysis from Savills shows local authorities will face a £2.2bn ‘black hole’ by 2028.

Councillor Lorna Fielker, Leader of Southampton City Council, said: “A safe, affordable, and healthy home is the foundation on which happy and successful lives are built.

“I am looking forward to working with the government and councils across the country to implement the recommendations in this report and ensure we are able to offer the volume and quality of homes the people of Southampton need and deserve.”
