Drone images show the moment a cloud of smoke covered the sky over Bitterne as firefighters worked to tackle a house fire.

Crews from Eastleigh, Hardley, Hightown, St Mary's and Wickham rushed to the blaze on Bitterne Road West on Saturday night shortly before 4pm.

Bitterne Road West was closed to traffic between Northam Road and Athelstan Road.

They used breathing apparatus, main jets, hose reel jets and ultra high-pressure lances to tackle the blaze and prevent fire spread.

Despite this, the fire which started on a loft, spread to two other neighbouring properties.

Drone images shared with the Echo show the cloud of smoke coming from the property at the junction of Bitterne Road West and Rampart Road.

The video also shows the firefighter's aerial ladder platform at the scene on the road.

One of the residents whose studio flat just narrowly escaped the fire, Leonardo Carvalho, 49, said: “I saw the fire coming from the window and just grabbed my documents and left".

As of 7pm, the fire appeared to have been out but the road remained closed throughout the evening.

Other residents looked on while firefighters scrambled to save the rest of the adjoining properties.

A fire service spokesperson said emergency services were first called at 3.55pm after the fire started in the loft space of the property.

Residents were told to avoid the area due to ongoing road closures and to keep windows and doors closed due to the smoke.
