Residents have said they “do not feel safe” in their own garden due to motorists speeding on roads near the site where a man in his 20s was killed.

Those living in Hedge End say they are “extremely worried” after a series of crashes in the area, including a fatal incident on Sunday.

An air ambulance was called to Barnfield Way just before midday after a crash between a Vauxhall and a Triumph motorcycle.

The motorbike rider, a man in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

But now those living on the surrounding roads say this is not the first incident on that stretch and have called for the speed limit to be lowered.

Helen Lintott’s Edmunds Close property backs onto Kings Copse Avenue, which has a 40mph speed limit, where a number of crashes over the years have seen walls smashed down and vehicles on their roofs.

Most recently a car left the carriageway shortly after the roundabout and careered into a brick wall.

Helen, who is part of the Speedwatch group for her area said: “The amount of people that we catch speeding on Barnfield is excessive.

“There’s houses both sides and since I have been here, there has been loads of crashes.

“Always the kids say ‘I was doing 20mph’, it’s because they’re not going slow enough for the roundabout and there’s a bit of a kick to that particular roundabout and if you’re going too fast you’re going to mount the pavement.

“It feels quite scary. It’s too fast, the road should be 30. There’s lots of accidents going on but the police aren’t interested apart from the fact that there’s Speedwatch.

“Cars are using it as a rat run, it’s not an A road or a B road which means there’s not the funding for the surface.

“It’s sad for whoever the parents are of that poor lad. It’s just so sad. This was not meant to be a major road, it isn’t a major road.”

Helen has since started a petition on Change.org calling for a full road safety survey to be carried out, adding that more development has led to the road becoming a “corridor to M27 junction 8”.

She is republicising her campaign after the events of Sunday.

But despite the efforts of residents, nothing has been done.

Pete Newcombe, 66, lives on Ambleside, which also runs next to Kings Copse Avenue.

He said: “Since the opening of the new bridge linking Barnfield and Heathouse Lane, residents along Kings Copse Avenue have been experiencing an upturn in road traffic, not only cars but also HGVs.

“I have contacted all of the local authorities multiple times over the last 4 years trying to get the issues recognised, but unfortunately they have all failed to consider any resolution.

“Just on the Salwey Road roundabout we have multiple cars crashing through brick walls, at least two cars have been T boned and completely written off.”
