An NHS boss has received an award from his team recognising his leadership.

Deputy director of estates and facilities, Mark Young, was given the award for being "outstanding in every way".

Recognised with a surprise celebration at a birthday lunch in Southampton's Westwood House, the staff at Solent NHS Trust thanked Mr Young for his exceptional management skills.

Mr Young, who joined the Trust in 2014 from an architecture background, said: "I was really humbled to receive the award, particularly as it came from my team."

Mark was described as approachable, caring, compassionate, inspirational, innovative, supportive and a visionary by colleagues.

The consensus echoed that Mr Young always has time for his staff and that his actions centre on the wellbeing of patients and staff.

A member of the team said: "Mark is hard-working and able to spot the logical solution that everyone else has invariably missed.

"He is a fantastic manager and an exceptional leader.

"Working for him is a privilege."

The secret surprise lunch was organised by Mr Young's personal assistant, Kerrie Lowe, to celebrate his birthday.

Mr Young heads up a team of about 350 people, including various roles such as caterers, cleaners, engineers, architects, receptionists and security officers.

Mr Young said: “Solent Estates and Facilities is a great group of people who work so hard and achieve amazing results every day. It is an honour to be part of the team.

“Being given this award was really humbling and meant so much to me.”
