A young motorcyclist has died in a 'tragic' crash at a busy junction in Hedge End.

The junction of Heath House Lane and Barnfield Way was closed off and full of police vehicles and ambulances following the crash at around 11.37am on Sunday.

According to police, the crash involved a Vauxhall car and a Triumph motorcycle.

The rider of the motorbike, a man in his 20s, was pronounced dead at the scene and his family has been informed by officers.

Ahead of the news being confirmed by police at around 4pm, a dog walker who lives near where the crash happened said to the Echo: "It appears that there has been a motorcycle crash which a lot of people in the area seem to be saying has been fatal.

"It’s a horrible tragedy and I wish everyone involved in the crash the best."

Barnfield Lane was closed down to the road of Vantage Copse, while Heath House Lane was closed from Sherwood Avenue to Alder Avenue while officers gathered evidence.

The road was shut for several hours, at the time of publishing.

In the wake of the man's death being confirmed, social media was awash with messages of condolence as the community passed on their wishes to the man's family.

One social media user said: "We drove down this road earlier not long after it had happened.

"Have been thinking about the motorcyclist all day.

"So sorry to hear of his passing at such a young age. Thoughts and prayers go out to his family and all those involved."

Officers are now trying to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash and are appealing for witnesses to the collision.

Police are also looking to hear from witnesses who may have seen the movements of either vehicle in the moments leading up to the tragic incident.
