A Southampton paedophile 'does not accept the jury's verdict' as he was jailed for sexual activity with a child, a court heard.

Robert Turnbull was jailed at Southampton Crown Court on Friday for four offences that took place between 2019 and 2021.

Following a trial, the 36-year-old, of Aldermoor Avenue, Southampton, was convicted of four counts of engaging in sexual activity with a child.

An order was also made for the forfeiture and destruction of a mobile phone.

Prosecutor Rob Harding said that there was a “significant disparity in age” between Turnbull and his victim.

Defending Turnbull, Ed Warren told the court 'there is little by way of offence mitigation', adding that his client 'remains of the position that obviously he does not accept the jury’s verdict'.

He added: “It is a very unfortunate set of circumstances that your honour is dealing with. A man who presents with his own vulnerabilities.

“These proceedings have now lasted for quite some time. Within that time he has deteriorated in terms of his own mental health.

“He certainly urges your honour and I urge your honour on his behalf to keep that sentence as short as possible.”

Mr Warren said his client struggles with drug abuse and has mental health issues.

Judge Nicholas Rowland, who presided over the trial, added that Turnbull has previous offences but “no previous similar offending - in fact no offending for 14 years.”

He was jailed for two years and is subject to a sexual harm prevention order and notification requirements for five years.
