With news surfacing about the potential return of a beloved toy store to the bustling high street of Southampton, the Echo looks back at when Toys R Us had their closing down sale.
Hundreds of excited customers flocked to the store on March 3, 2018, eager to seize great deals before the bidding farewell.
Facing financial difficulties, the company had entered administration.
The clearance event, which took place at the Western Esplanade location, attracted numerous families and children looking to take advantage of the special deals offered.
Ben Fawson from Redbridge, said he had spent around £100 – mainly on items for his step-daughter, but added that he “can’t wait to get home” to get the toys out of the boxes. Gran Claire Pike generously surprised her daughter and son-in-law with a discounted Mybabiie stroller car seat and pushchair.
Meanwhile, students Curtis Kenneavy, Rosie Morgan, and Anya Clayton excitedly searched for outfits for an upcoming David Attenborough-inspired celebration.
Shopping at the Southampton store were Marcin and Edyta Bala, a couple expecting their first child and browsing for baby essentials.
Marcin said: “We were just looking around the sales. It’s sad that it’s closing –why is it closing?
“It’s a shame.”
As shoppers and their families ventured into the store, they eagerly sought out the best deals amongst the nearly empty racks, surrounded by an array of discount signs.
Amidst the hustle and bustle, employees hurriedly worked to display the remaining items and assist patrons with their purchases.
A few customers observed the store's closure wistfully, reminiscing about the times spent there.
Julia Davies and Marie Dawes have been using the shop for years.
“We’ve been buying here for 20-odd years for children, and grandchildren,” said Julia. “It feels like the end of an era. It’s always been the place to go for children’s toys. We’re sad to see it go.”
Meanwhile, customer Andia Jenkins added: “It’s a bit of a shocker that it’s shutting down.
“It’s probably because everything’s online, its closure is a sign of the time.
“It used to be easy to pop in and get something.” Mum Sarah Lamb was shopping at the store with her children.
She said the closure meant online shopping may be one of the only options left.
“It’s a good toy shop. They have a good range of tech-related stuff,” she added.
“There aren’t that many other options now – you can only really get stuff like this online. Christmas will be hard.”
