A Southampton councillor has slammed the management behind Oasis Academy Lord's Hill after its recent damning Ofsted report.

Cllr Sally Goodfellow said she is "deeply concerned" after the school on Romsey Road received an "inadequate" rating following a recent inspection. 

The inspection found that achievement at the school has been 'too low for too long' and added that pupils’ behaviour is not acceptable.

It comes just weeks after teachers and staff went on strike, arguing that student behaviour needs improvement following a number of incidents.

Strikes set to take place this week on July 10 and 11 were cancelled as progress continues on talks.

Responding to the inspection report, Cllr Goodfellow, who represents the Redbridge ward said it was "eye-opening". 

"We have been aware of the challenges in the day-to-day running of the school, mainly around student behaviour and staff feeling unsafe, but we were not expecting such a shock grading.

"We believe our young residents have been failed by Oasis who have had poor quality of education.

"This is of no fault to the teachers but the leadership and governance who now need to be held to account.

"I am passionate about the quality of education and it’s why I have been a school governor at Shirley Warren for a number of years which happens to be a feeder school to Oasis.

"The poor quality of education and the running of Oasis Lord's Hill will affect the outcomes of these young people, many of whom are on free school meals."

Now, alongside her Labour colleagues, Councillors Lee Whitbread and Eugene McManus, Cllr Goodfellow called on Oasis to "put this right urgently". 

She has since contacted directors asking for an urgent meeting.

She added: "Hopefully new beginnings in Sept to put this right with the support of the LA and government depts."

The Ofsted inspection took place on June 4 and 5, four years after the school was rated 'requires improvement' and eight years after it received a 'good' rating. 

Interim Principle Simon Firth told the Echo: "I know that Oasis Academy Lord’s Hill has the potential to be one of the best schools in Southampton and it is my determination to get it there."

He added that he is holding a meeting with parents to discuss the school's improvement plan.
