Newly elected Eastleigh MP calls for emergency health budget
(Image: NQ, Jose Ramos)
Newly elected Liberal Democrat MP for Eastleigh Liz Jarvis has called for an emergency Health and Care Budget, to support local health services on the brink.
Along with her party, Ms Jarvis is now calling for an Emergency Health and Care Budget within the next four weeks, to provide urgent investment for local NHS and social care services.
She said: “I am incredibly proud of the positive campaign that the Liberal Democrats have run in Eastleigh, delivering the change that our area was desperately crying out for.
“Whether you voted for me or not, I will work tirelessly for you, to give Eastleigh the fair deal that we all deserve. That is why I am calling for an emergency Health and Care Budget to fix our NHS brought to its knees by years of Conservative party neglect.
“We have listened to the concerns that countless people have put to us on the doorstep, from the crisis facing our local health services to the filthy sewage being pumped into our waterways, to spiralling mortgages and rents, and I promise to be your local champion and take these issues right to the heart of Parliament.”

Here's New Forest West - again another Conservative hold, and a reduced majority.
Sir Desmond Swayne won 35 per cent of the vote commpared with 64 per cent last time out.
Like New Forest East, in New Forest West there was a massive drop off in Conservative support.
There was also healthy gains for Labour and Reform.
Here's the result in New Forest East.
A reduced majority for Sir Julian Lewis and the Conservatives, but still a big one. Sir Julian won 38.5% of the vote last night.
The Conservative vote share was 26 per cent down on 5 years ago.
Labour win 'thumping majority' - Southampton professor
Reacting to last night's results, Professor of Politics Robert Johns, University of Southampton, said: “Labour has won a thumping majority on one of the lowest shares of the vote for a winning party in a century or more.
“This is partly about lack of enthusiasm for the party – witness the strong performance of independent challenger but also about anti-Tory voters realising, especially later in the campaign, that Labour didn't need them and therefore switching elsewhere.
“Turnout was the lowest since 2001 and it's no coincidence that that was also an election in which the result was obvious and the parties too close.
“The right-wing vote was split almost 50:50 but the slight advantage for the Conservatives is huge for various reasons: it keeps them in position as the second party and makes it harder for a Farage takeover.
“Labour didn't need Scottish seats but it won them handsomely anyway, and the Scottish electoral map now resembles the 2010 election – it is as if the independence referendum never happened.”

What does Labour win mean for workers?
Southampton solicitors firm Paris Smith has offered comment on the Labour landslide.
Employment partner Tabytha Cunningham based at the Southampton firm said: "Importantly for employers, Labour has committed to a number of key changes in employment law – including providing basic rights of protection against unfair dismissal for all workers from day one.
"They have committed to changes to zero hours contracts - banning exploitative contracts and providing everyone the right to have a contract that reflects the numbers of hours they regularly work.
"They have also committed to changes to prevent 'fire and rehire', providing a strengthened code of practice.
"Wider changes included plans to change the national minimum wage, reduce the current restrictions on trade union activity and make changes to the current distinctions between worker, employee and self-employed, as well as extending the deadline to submit employment claims from three to six months."
Drop in Tory support in Romsey & Southampton North - but Nokes holds on
Caroline Nokes has held on as Conservative MP for Romsey & Southampton North - the large constituency that stretches from Swaythling in the south all the way to Thruxton in the north.
She held off a tough Lib Dem challenge, securing a majority of around 2,100.
Support for the Conservatives in that constituency dropped massively, with votes instead going to the Liberal Democrats and Reform, who pipped Labour to finish third.

Satvir Kaur: 'Huge honour' to follow Alan Whitehead.
The new Labour MP for Southampton Test has said it is a 'huge honour' to follow in the footsteps of Alan Whitehead.
Satvir Kaur said winning was an "incredible feeling".
"As someone born and bred Southampton that’s always lived here, I am a local girl from our inner city and the people of Southampton have made me who I am and tonight they made me their member of parliament and I am completely humbled.
"It is the greatest honour of my life. My priority will be to make sure that Southampton gets its fair share because for too long we have not, we have been overlooked.
"My job is to fight for Southampton people, champion our great city. We have huge potential and I will fight every single day and work extremely hard to make sure that we reach that potential and deliver that change that people voted for today."
Speaking about following Alan Whitehead, who stood down after 27 years in the job, she said: "It’s a huge honour, Alan Whitehead has represented Southampton for 27 years. He has done so with the upmost integrity and dedication and it’s an honour to be given that mantle and people putting their trust in me and I will work extremely hard to ensure that I serve our great city as well as he has."

Southampton Test - vote falls for both main parties
With Alan Whitehead standing down at this election, Satvir Kaur stood in his place and held the seat.
However, both she and Conservative Ben Burcombe-Filer lost votes compared with 2019.
The big winnners? Again, Reform have done well, and are in third place, but the Greens have also done well in Test, just shy of 10% of the vote.
Hamble Valley - results closer than expected
The new constituency of Hamble Valley has been won by Paul Holmes - but it was closer than a lot of people thought.
Covering the areas of Hamble, Netley, Hedge End, Sarisbury, Titchfield, Whiteley and Botley, the former Eastleigh MP recorded a majority of just under 5,000.
As Hamble Valley is a new seat, we don't have results from 2019 to compare it to.
But notional results were compiled by professors Colin Rallings and Michael Thrasher of the University of Plymouth, which shows how Hamble Valley would have voted in 2019 had it been contested with those boundaries.
Comparing with tonight's result, we can see that there has been another big drop in support for the Conservatives.
Fareham result shows massive drop in support for Braverman
Here is the result from Fareham & Waterlooville - which has seen a massive drop in support for potential Tory leadership contender Suella Braverman.
The former home secretary recorded a majority of just over 6,000 - but that was down 20,000 on five years ago.
Compared with 2019, the Conservative vote here dropped by more than a quarter.
Picking up the pieces was mainly Reform, but also some of those votes going to Labour.
Liz Truss loses her seat
Some big national news coming in just now.
Former PM Liz Truss has lost her seat in South West Norfolk.
She was beaten by Labour's Terry Jermy by 600 votes.
Southampton Itchen - a closer look
Let's stay with Southampton Itchen for now and take a closer look at the results.
Labour now have a decent majority of 6,105 - swinging it from a Conservative majority of 4,498 five years ago.
Darren Paffey won 41.3% of the vote, to Sidney Yankson's 25.3%.
In terms of change since 2019, you can see from the graph below that there's been a massive swing away from the Conservatives, losing 25 per cent of the vote.
Labour only marginally improved on their vote from five years ago, with most of the increase going to Reform and Green.
Behind Labour and the Conservatives, Reform came third (18%), Green fourth (7.3%), Lib Dems fifth (7%), Declan Clune sixth (0.7%).
Darren Paffey: Election result is incredibly exciting and daunting
Let's get some reaction now from Labour's new Southampton Itchen MP, Darren Paffey.
Speaking to the Echo's Tim Edgley, Mr Paffey said: "It’s incredibly exciting. It’s incredibly daunting.
"Being a member of parliament is something that only 650 people in the country get to do so I feel really privileged.
Darren Paffey was electecd MP for Southampton Itchen (Image: NQ)
"But this is not about glamour, this is not about privilege, this is about work that needs doing for our city and for the country so I am just absolutely committed to Labour’s plans, Labour’s missions.
"Throughout the country tonight we are seeing hundreds of new Labour MPs being elected in order to deliver those missions and achieve change for the country so the opportunity to play my part in that is a massive privilege.
"One of my priorities is around cleaning up the River Itchen. We see that far too much sewage is going into that and it’s making it really unpleasant when it should be one of the most beautiful parts of the city."
There have been some historic losses today.
One is Aldershot in North Hampshire, where Alex Baker has been elected with a 5,700 majority.
It has been Conservative since 1918.
Just waking up? Here's what you need to know this morning...
Sir Keir Starmer will become the next Prime Minister - his Labour party is on course to win more than 400 seats.
The Conservatives have lost seats around Hampshire.
The Tories lost Southampton Itchen to former deputy leader of the city council, Darren Paffey, and Eastleigh to the Liberal Democrat’s Liz Jarvis.
The Conservatives have also lost the seats of Basingstoke, Portsmouth North and Aldershot, to Labour, and North East Hampshire and Winchester, to the Liberal Democrats.
We've got a full guide for those just joining our coverage now - have a read by clicking here.
Suella Braverman has said "I'm sorry" as she returned a much-reduced majority in Fareham and Waterlooville.

Here are the results in Hampshire:
