Morrisons Daily in Romsey closed after another ram raid

The Morrisons Daily store in The Cornmarket, Romsey, has been damaged after an attempted break-in.

On Friday morning, June 21, a staff member wrote in a public Facebook group: "Due to being broken into yet again Morrisons will be closed until further notice while we get the shop back in order I'm sorry for the inconvenience."

This comes just months after the shopfront was "absolutely destroyed" after an attempted robbery. On March 18, the store was forced to shut after the shop’s shutter was severely dented and a glass window smashed.

Geoff Cooper, the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Romsey and Southampton North, told the Echo's sister paper, the Romsey Advertiser, that this is the fourth time in six months the store has been ramraided. 

Mr Cooper, who is also a Test Valley Borough Councillor for North Baddesley, said: "The concern here is that this is the fourth ram-raid in about six months, from speaking to the store manager this morning, it looks like Morrisons themselves are not being quick enough to put in the correct security measures.

"The ram-raiders now see the store as a very soft touch because it has plywood protecting it. 

"I will be speaking with Hampshire County Council to see if there is anything we can do in the marketplace, be that barriers or bollards, maybe even nice fountains. Something needs to be in place between the road and the store to make sure it is protected from ram-raiders. 

"I'm not sure what else we can do to deter them, it is very obvious that the store is a soft touch for ram-raiders at the moment. 

Hampshire Police and Morrisons have been approached for further comment.
