A housing association has applied for planning permission to rebuild a communal bin store that was engulfed by fire last year.

The facility at Thomas Grant Avenue in Gosport was so badly damaged in the blaze in October 2023 that it had to be demolished.

Now Vivid Homes is seeking consent to provide residents with a replacement.

The site is beside a playground in the St George Barracks North Conservation Area, one of three such zones in or near the town centre.

It includes old fortifications known as the Gosport Lines along with most of the 19th century barracks, which were built in the colonial style with flat roofs and verandas.

A railway line used by Queen Victoria during her visits to the Solent area ran through the site.

A design and access statement that accompanies Vivid's application says: "The bin store was subject to substantial fire emanating from the bins, resulting in an unsafe structure which has been demolished on grounds of safety.

"The applicant has sufficient on-site car parking and traffic management to facilitate the safe and proper conducting of the works.

"The works will be conducted to relevant health and safety standards, and protection of the public will be paramount."

The scheme is outlined in a public notice published by Gosport Borough Council, which will decide the application.
