Demolition work continues on the Leisure World site as it prepares to be used as a car park for cruise passengers.

The demolition of the once popular and busy Leisure World site in Southampton is now in full swing with crews tearing out large portions of the blue and silver building.

Leisure World has been subject to some controversy over the last year after original plans for a new development on the site stalled.

Originally, a £250 million scheme was planned for the site which included 650 homes, two 150-room hotels, a cinema and a casino.

As previously reported in the Echo, planning officers told members of the planning and rights of way panel that the council had received no interest from the development industry to take forward the outline planning permission at a meeting on Tuesday, June 4.

Associated British Ports (ABP) has since been given the green light to flatten the site and use the council-owned land at West Quay Road for port-related parking and vehicle storage for up to five years.

The demolition of the site is set to last for three months, according to ABP.
