The owner of a bookshop has spoken of their anger after the Union Jack flag was stolen just days after D-Day.

The Book Shop in Lee-on-Solent was subject to mindless thievery at the weekend.

Posting on Instagram, the owner said the thief was caught on CCTV purloining the flag and asked them to “show respect and honour for the heroes of D-Day” and to “please return it”.

They said: “I would rather not have a showdown in the street.

“Please post it back through our letterbox or tie it back up again.”

Many people expressed their outrage on social media, with one Instagram user commenting: “Disgraceful. What is the matter with folk?”

Another said: “If they don’t give it back, pray someone knocks into respect into their skull and heart.”

But the flag is now due to be returned after the owner confronted the thief in the high street.
