Resurfacing work also began on Deacon Road at 7.30am this morning (May 28) and will continue until 5.30pm.
A road closure is in place which will also effect the junctions with Deacon Crescent and White's Road.
Motorists are being urged to follow the signed diversion route and plan journeys ahead of time.
Temporary traffic signals are also in place at Portsmouth Road's junction with Wright's Hill.
This comes ahead of work to install a pedestrian crossing.
