Sophie Dickinson, better known as SOPHIX J, from Southampton, showcased her musical talent at the city’s first Electronic Music Dance Weekender, put on by Southampton Forward in March.

The 24-year-old, who’s recently been making waves in London as a DJ, shared the limelight at Southampton’s celebration of electronic dance music, with other top-class DJs and musicians from the city.

Sophie was thrilled to be back in Southampton, where she moved to for university in 2019, but she says the city’s nightlife could do with a boost. Sophie said: “We keep seeing nightclubs facing closures and the clubs still aren’t at full capacity. It’s like less people are going out clubbing.”

The young artist emphasised the importance of a thriving nightlife scene. She said: “Events like Southampton Forward’s EDM Weekender are crucial for bringing the community together and showcasing local talent.

"Southampton needs good nightlife to encourage creativity, community, and cultural exchange. It's about more than just partying – it's about creating memorable experiences and fostering a sense of belonging.”

The talented youngster’s journey into the world of music didn’t follow a conventional path, Sophie embarked on a degree in Interior Design at Southampton’s Solent University before she found herself drawn to DJing.

And, when she was unable to complete her study because of delays brought about by the pandemic, Sophie’s passion for music intensified.

Her breakthrough came when she landed her first festival gig at Boomtown in Hampshire, a moment that solidified her confidence to pursue music professionally.

She added: “I never thought I could have a career in music, and it wasn't until I stumbled upon the DJ decks at my university's radio station that I realised my true calling, and when I landed my first gig at Boomtown, I knew this was the industry where I wanted to be.”

Navigating the music industry hasn't been without its challenges. “Being a DJ is not for the faint-hearted,” Sophie admits.

“It requires mental strength, resilience, and a relentless drive to succeed.”

Despite the hurdles, the determined 24-year-old remains optimistic about Southampton's music scene.

“The DnB scene in Southampton has always been vibrant,” she says. “But there's always room for improvement, especially in terms of representation and inclusivity for DJs.”

Currently, Sophie juggles multiple roles, and recently stepped into the position of Social Media and Community Coordinator at a bass music record label, Circus Records.

Additionally, she serves as a Director and Promoter for Sounds Crazy Collective, an events company based in Southampton.

Sophie said: “It would be great to see even more talent come out of Southampton in the future and events are the way forward.”
