Pensioners at a New Forest care home are enjoying plenty of fringe benefits after the family-run business opened its own hairdressing salon.
Oaklands Rest Home in Marchwood recently won the Management Team of the Year title at the Caring UK Awards after beating a record number of rival contenders.
Now, Oaklands is proving to be a cut above the rest in other ways as well.
The 29-bedroom home has responded to the wishes of its residents by opening a fully functional salon that recognises the importance of pampering and relaxation.
Oaklands used to welcome a hairdresser who paid regular visits.
But some of the pensioners called for a permanent salon where they could have their hair washed, cut, and styled in a comfortable and familiar environment.
Dave Ray, head of maintenance, transformed part of the building by creating an area that comprised a salon and a cosy café.
Drawing inspiration from feedback, Mr Ray and his team redesigned an existing space to ensure it met the needs and preferences of residents.
Commenting on the new salon, care home manager Nicola Ray said: “It’s extremely important for us to listen to our residents and create a space they love.
"The salon is not only equipped for hair care but also offers beauty services, allowing our residents to indulge in pampering treatments and prepare for special occasions."
Residents are delighted by the new facility, which ensures they always look their best.
One of the pensioners said: "I really enjoyed going to the salon with my daughter for my nails - it was a real treat." Another added: “How lucky we are to have our very own salon."
Oaklands won the Management Team of the Year at the end of 2023.
Speaking at the time the home's director, Samir Patel, said: "This exceptional recognition is testament to the dedication, compassion, and outstanding commitment of the entire Oaklands team.
"Our staff's commitment to excellence has undoubtedly made a significant difference in the community, and it is heartening to see their efforts recognised on a national level.
"It’s not the management alone, but the collective spirit, collaboration, and hard work that makes Oaklands such an extraordinary and award-winning establishment.”
The annual awards are organised by Script Events in partnership with Caring UK.
Event director Dominic Musgrave said: "This year’s winners should be very proud – the high standard of entries made it a tough job to select a final shortlist, never mind a winner and runner-up in each category."
