The brother of the Saints fan who died following a fall at St Mary's has thanked the NHS staff who cared for him.

In a letter to the Daily Echo, Brian Oakley said medics at Southampton General Hospital's Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit "helped ease the pain" felt by his younger brother Simon and his loved ones.

The 59-year-old was rushed to hospital after collapsing during Southampton's home game against Rotherham on October 7.

He suffered a spinal injury and died on November 13.

Since his passing, dozens of people have paid tribute to him, including Southampton FC.

A photo of Simon was displayed on the big screens at St Mary's during Wednesday's game against Bristol City - the first home fixture since his death.

The Daily Echo's book of condolence has been signed by many of Simon's friends, relatives and fellow Saints fans.

On behalf of the Oakley family I would like to pass on our sincere thanks and gratitude to all medical and support staff in the Neurosciences Intensive Care Unit at Southampton General Hospital for the wonderful care and attention they afforded our youngest brother Simon following his tragic accident at St. Mary's Stadium on 7th October 2023 up until his death on 13th November.

You all helped ease the pain over his final few weeks, for Simon, his relatives and friends.
