Led Zeppelin playing Southampton's Gaumont in 1973

These pictures capture the action as one of the world's biggest rock bands played Southampton in 1973 as well as when fans queued for tickets the previous month.

The date was January 21 when a capacity crowd of two-and-a-half thousand flocked to the Gaumont Theatre - now The Mayflower - in anticipation of witnessing a live performance by legendary rock and roll band Led Zeppelin. This show marked the first of two consecutive nights in which the group put on an electrifying concert in the city.

Captured by the Daily Echo, this concert features Robert Plant on vocals, Jimmy Page on guitar, John Paul Jones on bass and keyboard, and John Bonham as drummer.

Their performance took the audience through some of their most cherished songs such as Whole Lotta Love, Dazed and Confused, Black Dog and Stairway to Heaven.

Following their performance at Gaumont, Led Zeppelin took to Southampton University's Old Refectory stage for an iconic set.

In this momentous show, frontman Robert Plant dedicated Whole Lotta Love to Alan Whitehead, who was then president of Southampton University Students' Union and would ultimately become the renowned Labour MP of the city.

The University gig was released on vinyl as Any Port in a Storm, then later on a double compact disc titled Burst on Fire.
