The Prodigy have been forced to pull out of their scheduled headline performance at Boomtown.

The band, renowned for songs such as Firestarter, Out of Space and Breathe, were due to the Grand Central stage on Sunday, August 13.

It was supposed to be The Prodigy's long-awaited return to Winchester, the last time the band were in the city was back in 1992.

On Twitter, the band said: "The Prodigy have unfortunately been forced to cancel their upcoming headline festival performances at Dreambeach (ES) and Boomtown (UK) under doctor’s orders, as Maxim recovers from a temporary back injury.

"This isn't a decision the band take lightly and they apologise to all fans who are travelling to these shows. We will update everyone on his progress and future shows as soon as possible."

On Instagram, Boomtown organisers added: "We are now working hard to bring this iconic band to Grand Central next year at Boomtown 2024. Until then we send Maxim our love and wish him a smooth recovery.

"This news brings a shift to our Sunday programming, rest assured, we're working on this. Please check the woov app for updates. Thank you for your understanding."

Spanning across 12 main stages plus hundreds of smaller venues, Boomtown will feature heavyweights from across many different genres as well as some up-and-coming DJs performing to thousands of festival-goers.

Grand Central, one of the biggest stages, will play host to art-punk legend Peaches, as well as disco royalty Sister Sledge.

Brit Award and Mercury Prize nominee Loyle Carner and hip hop icons Cypress Hill will also take to the stage over the weekend.

Andy C, Dimension, Interplanetary Criminal, Enei B2B Mefjus ft. Jakes and many more will play on the festival's biggest DJ stage, Origin.

The mammoth stone-like stage towering at over 90 ft tall, with waterfalls cascading at either side and giant fire bowls sitting atop, will provide electronic music lovers the space to dance all day.

There is a brand new stage in district Area 404, Spectrum 360, created by queer DJ pioneer Mandidextrous, that will showcase the full spectrum of the harder style of dance music and serve as a brave space for ravers to dance in unity.

There is a first-time collaboration with Boiler Room and Sports Banger, who are taking over the Hidden Woods all day on Sunday with a full lineup including VTSS B2B Hudson Mohawke, Elli Acula, Tasha plus many more.
