A MAN threw a sofa on his partner, stamped on her face and dragged her through broken glass when she played dead out of fear at what was coming next.

Dean Weight lashed out in a "shocking" and "prolonged" attack, knocking his victim to the ground when he struck her over the head with a glass bottle.

The 33-year-old then pulled her to her hands and knees before stamping on her face three times.

The woman then played dead hoping he would leave. But Weight then dragged her along the floor through broken glass by her feet.

He then grabbed her neck, bit her right breast and strangled her until she could feel her windpipe closing.

The attack in the victim's home only stopped when her eyes began to close, at which point Weight dropped her and threw a sofa on her.

The woman was left with bruising to her chin and the bridge of her nose as well as a swollen neck and pain to several parts of her body.

She also suffered cuts to her hands and legs from the glass on the floor.

In a statement read out at Southampton Crown Court, she said she thought she was going to die.

The police were called the following day, August 10 last year, by the woman's mother and a friend.

Weight, of Suffolk Drive, Chandler's Ford handed himself in and later pleaded guilty to intentional strangulation and attempting to cause grievous bodily harm.

Prosecuting, Anthea Brooks said Weight had drunk 750ml of rum before the attack and didn't recall the assault when questioned.

She said he caused "really serious harm though thankfully no grave or permanent injuries as a result".

Mitigating, Keeley Harvey said her client suffers from mental health issues, with reports showing he may have bipolar depression and ADHD.

She said his sentence should be suspended as he is "desperate to try and get that help".

She told the court: "He had no reason to do it. It certainly wasn't intended. It just flicked like a switch and we may never get any answer to that."

Before the attack, Weight had been talking with his partner about a court case he wanted her to attend.

He has 13 convictions for 24 offences including driving matters, failing to comply and a common assault.

He was jailed for 14 months for the attack which took place at around 1pm to 2pm on August 9 last year.

Sentencing, Judge Brian Forster KC said: "I do accept that this offending is borne out of your difficult circumstances which has led you to drinking.

"You have no knowledge of what took place and also you have ongoing difficulties with your drinking habit.

"[You are] someone that needs help."
