A COMPANY equipped to help tackle the national shortage of lorry drivers has been praised by its local MP.
Caroline Dinenage spoke out after visiting Gosport-based GO-LGV, a leading provider of professional LGV (Large Goods Vehicle) training.
The company offers a simplified and cost-effective process for obtaining a Class 1 HGV licence.
Its streamlined approach aims to make training more accessible and affordable, potentially encouraging more would-be truckers to pursue a career in the logistics profession.
Regulations were changed at the end of 2021 after it emerged that many people found the cost of LGV training prohibitive.
GO-LGV was founded with the aim of providing a fast-track training route using qualified instructors and modern training vehicles.
Ms Dinenage, Tory MP for Gosport since 2010, said there was a large shortfall of professional drivers in the UK.
But she added: "The rates of pay and job security are high, so I am delighted we have a Gosport business looking to train future HGV drivers.
"Over the pandemic, we saw how vital hauliers were in keeping our country running.
"Whilst the government has taken 33 proactive actions to address the shortage of HGV drivers, efforts by companies such as GO-LGV will help bolster the workforce of this profession."
Ms Dinenage met the managing director, Damian Gaffney, and the training manager, Adam Grant.
Mr Gaffney said: "Obtaining your Class 1 HGV (LGV C+E) licence, which allows you to drive any heavy goods vehicle up to 44 tons without restriction, is much simpler than people think.
"You complete your medical and theory examinations, followed by an intensive practical training course typically consisting of 30 hours - approximately eight sessions - behind the wheel.
"Our emphasis is on developing competent and professional HGV drivers, providing the skills not only to pass the test but also to pursue a successful career.
"We assist you at every step, from booking the medical and theory tests to the practical driving.
"If you hold a full car licence and aspire to drive an artic unit, the process has been streamlined, resulting in a significant reduction in costs as well."
Mr Grant said the company provided comprehensive instruction and a deep understanding of road safety.
"Our instructors carry the NRI (National Register of LGV Instructors) qualification and boast extensive experience in the field of transport and logistics," he said.
"This combination of expertise and industry knowledge enables us to deliver the highest standard of training."
