MORE than £800,000 has been secured in Southampton to make one of the most dangerous roads in the country safer.

Southampton City Council has been given £875,000 to make improvements to the A3025 Portsmouth Road corridor.

It comes after the road was identified by the Department for Transport as one of the top 50 highest accident and risk A-roads in England.

Proposed measures to improve safety include a new zebra crossing at Botley Road and Spring Road, upgrades to crossing points at Fort Road and Adey Crescent and improved crossings and separation for bicycles at the Saltmarsh junction.

Also planned are measures along Portsmouth Road to support a lower speed limit of 20mph and an upgrade to existing signal crossings at Manor Road South.

Cabinet Member for Environment and Transport, Councillor Eamonn Keogh, said: “I am really pleased that we have been successful in this funding and I’m looking forward to working closely with the local community on these improvements.

"The stretch of road along the A3025 Portsmouth Road is one of the busiest routes into Southampton and this funding will be essential for making journeys safer for all.”

It is hoped that the new measures, planned to start in winter this year, will prevent fatal crashes and serious injuries.

The money was secured after the council submitted the proposals for improvements to the Government.

A consultation will now take place with public perception surveys distributed alongside information drop-in sessions.
