Flames ripped through the air as visitors rushed into the World of Jumanji at Chessington World of Adventures.

Packed with three new rides, adventure trails and much more - the attraction immerses families in the world of the 1995 hit film's sequels.

Children don't have to be as brave as Dr Smolder Braverstone (played by the Rock Dwayne Johnson in the films) to take on centrepiece rollercoaster Mandrill Mayhem - but it might help.

The shuttle rollercoaster - Chessington's first inversion ride and the world's only Jumanji ride - sweeps riders up into the arms of a mandrill before flipping them upside down at 42mph, and then spirals them up to the 55ft Jaguar Shrine along the 144-tonne streel track.

There's only one way down - and thrill-seekers are sent shooting down the track back to the start.

Less daring - but still fun - is the Mamba Strike that takes riders into the sky before swooping them back down.

The third addition to the park - Ostritch Stampede - takes riders on a whirlwind ride.

A maze of pathways keeps families entertained, along with themed refreshments at the bazaar.

Six new Jumanji-themed hotel rooms have opened up at the Chessington Safari Hotel.

Scott O’Neil, chief executive of Merlin Entertainments, which operates Chessington, welcomed visitors on a sneak preview ahead of the opening today.

He said: “Whether you are a fan of the films, a fan of rollercoasters or are looking to take your family adventures to The Next Level, the amazing World of Jumanji is ready to welcome all ‘those who seek to find, a way to leave their world behind’.

"Years in the making by the best teams in the business and full of ‘firsts’, we can’t wait to share the adventures within World of Jumanji. And, with Chessington’s first inversion we know that we have created an experience that will turn seasoned enthusiasts - and a new generation of rollercoaster fans - upside down.”
