EXPERTS have outlined the measures they say need to be taken to ensure the Solent Freeport helps the region achieve its full potential.

A new report cites the freeport's ability to retain and strengthen the local workforce, plus its role in fostering the development of new industries such as renewable energy.

But it says gaps in knowledge have highlighted the need for more communication to clarify the vision and benefits of the scheme.

The report has been published by law firm Blake Morgan and a think tank called Southern Policy Centre following a period of intensive research.

Solent Freeport, the first scheme of its type to be approved by the government, aims to unlock billions of pounds of inward investment, supporting the creation of jobs and driving economic growth.

The report says many business leaders are optimistic about the potential opportunities.

But they feel gaps in knowledge among members of the business community need to be addressed to ensure the scheme boosts growth across the region, not just in the freeport "bubble".

The report calls for strong leadership and a collaborative approach that brings together different stakeholders and champions the region in a coordinated way.

Blake Morgan and Southern Policy Centre are planning a seminar that will enable businesses to further explore the opportunities presented by the freeport and how they can be used to deliver growth.

Simon Eden, Southern Policy Centre director said: "The next few months are important if the Solent Freeport is to deliver the promised benefits to the central south’s economy.

"The Freeport Team are open to working with local businesses and our research suggests they should lose no time in building the collaborative approach so necessary for long-term success."
