CHRISTMAS is fast approaching, and with the news the annual market is returning, festive spirits are higher than ever.
One question on people’s minds is whether free parking will be available to residents in and around the city.
We asked the councils in Southampton, Eastleigh, and the New Forest to see if shoppers will benefit from a cut on parking charges.
Southampton
Unfortunately for those buying stocking fillers in the city centre, parking charges will not be removed or cut.
Southampton City Council said: “The council does not currently have any plans to amend its parking charges for the Christmas period.

“Southampton’s daytime parking charges are similar to that offered in neighbouring authorities.”
Eastleigh
Similarly to Southampton, parking charges are remaining firmly in place for the festive season.
Eastleigh Borough Council has “no plans” to reduce parking charges for Christmas.
New Forest
To encourage our residents to “shop local” this Christmas, there will be four days when parking charges will not apply in town and village centre car parks.
All New Forest District Council pay and display car parks will be free of charge on the following three days:
• Small Business Saturday (December 3, 2022)
• The last weekend before Christmas (December 17 and 18 2022) In addition, each town and parish can nominate a day during the Christmas period when parking will be free.
For this information, please contact individual town parishes or councils.
