A ZOO has announced the death of one of its giraffes.

The giraffe named Irsula collapsed and died unexpectedly on Tuesday, August 16.

This is the second giraffe  the zoo has lost recently, with Marwell announcing the death of Matilda, the zoo’s oldest Rothschild Giraffe, in June.

Irsula arrived at Marwell in 2011 from Woburn Safari Park (UK) and was among four female giraffes living at the zoo.

A Facebook post, published around midday by Marwell Wildlife said: “We are deeply saddened to announce the death of one of our giraffes.

“Our keepers and vet team are working together to establish more details after Irsula collapsed suddenly earlier today.

“Thank you to all our guests for your support and understanding at this time. We will keep you updated with more information.”

A spokesperson for the zoo said: “Unfortunately, as the incident only occurred today and is ongoing, we are unable to comment further at this time. Once we know more we will be looking to put out an official statement.”

The second consecutive giraffe death sparked concern among the public on Facebook.

In response to a comment on the post, Marwell Wildlife said: “Thank you for your concern and kind words. Our vet team and animal keepers are working together to establish more details at this time and we will keep guests updated with more information.

“With regard to Matilda, following the onset of symptoms thought to be age-related, our veterinarians and animal teams made the difficult decision to prevent further suffering and euthanase her. Giraffes can live for between 20 and 25 years in captivity, so at 25 her age is a testament to the excellent care and attention she received from her keepers.”

The social media post on Irsula’s death has received over 300 comments of condolences.

The local zoo, in Thompsons Lane, has always homed giraffes since its been open to the public. Marwell welcomed its first giraffe in October 1971.

Following the latest loss, Marwell is now home to just three giraffes, Maked, Christa and Ruby, who were all born at the Winchester Zoo.
