A LARGE ADVERTISING board is currently being built on the busy Above Bar Street outside the entrance to Westquay shopping centre.
The freestanding, double-sided internally illuminated LED digital board will measure 2.52 m wide by 5.04 m high, it will also be raised 2m off the ground.
The planning application for its construction was approved by Southampton City Council in December 2019.
The structure is located in a pedestrian area often frequented by buskers.
The site is owned by Southampton City Council.
In 2019, plans for the structure were described as "large and overbearing" by a spokesperson for City of Southampton Society.
The public comment read: "The CGI [image of the plans] suggests that the site would appear very cluttered with insufficient clear space between the advertisement display and the West Quay awning.
"The circular area outside of W.Q. is often used by performers."
The application was submitted by Ocean Outdoor advertising services firm in August 2019.
