A TAKE That musical is coming to Southampton – and the TV show talent winners who star in the band got tips from Robbie Williams himself when he stopped off in the city.

The megastar met Five to Five, who triumphed on Gary Barlow’s BBC TV show Let It Shine to star in the new stage musical The Band, backstage at his sell-out show at St Mary’s stadium this week.

Featuring the music of Take That, The Band is a new Tim Firth musical which comes to the Mayflower Theatre on its debut tour this autumn. Take That are co-producers.

The Band is being played by AJ Bentley, Nick Carsberg, Yazdan Qafouri Isfahani, Curtis T Johns and Sario Watanabe-Soloman, who make up Five to Five.

Curtis and AJ spoke to the Daily Echo this week about the stage show, and of their excitement hanging out with Robbie.

Curtis said: “Just before Robbie’s show we went backstage to speak to him. I spoke to him about the new draft of the script as him and all of Take That are heavily involved as co-producers.

“He was very excited with what he’s seen so far and based on the workshop we had. We had a good chat and a laugh. It’s surreal to be in such close contact – that they even know who we are is so crazy.

“Robbie has been heavily involved in the creative process and all of Take That are super excited because it is part of their legacy.”

But how did Robbie seem as he stepped out in front of tens of thousands of adoring fans in Southampton?

“He was as cool as a cucumber,” Curtis declared.

“It’s weird, though, as we still have that feeling of being slightly in awe of him. We grew up with their music and success so it’s pretty amazing.”

Curtis also revealed that Robbie was so taken with Southampton he might join the boys for a night out when they are here.

“We spoke about coming to Southampton on tour and he said he might have a few drinks with us and Take That – all depending on how busy they all are. That would be an amazing night.”

Indeed, leather kilt-clad Robbie told the crowd “We are Great Britain and we’re not scared,” as he paid an emotional tribute to the victims of the recent Manchester and London terror attacks with a reworked version of Strong.

Fellow band member AJ, 21, admits to being a massive fan of Robbie and added: “All of Take That have been our heroes over the years – we all love them.

“It’s surreal each time we meet Robbie. A year ago I would never have dreamt it would happen and to have him as a producer – it’s a dream job for us.”
