IF PROOF were ever needed that you are never too old to rock, a Hampshire care home is holding its very own music festival today.
A part of dementia awareness charity The Purple Angel’s “World Rocks against Dementia” campaign, the charity festival at Orchard Gardens in Bishopstoke Park Retirement Village aims to raise awareness of dementia while raising money for Hampshire charities 1 Community and Open Sight, as well as the Alzheimer’s Society.
Kicking off at 1pm, the festival will feature performances from the Osbourne School in Winchester’s award winning choir Rubik’s Cube, four-piece acoustic covers band We Are Robot , Ruth Elizabeth, and classical and Spanish guitarist Steve Picken.
Meanwhile, magician Mike Brown will be performing some close-up conjuring.
There will be stalls from Wainwrights Chemists, Eastleigh-based charity Open Sight, and Solicitors Eric Robinson who will be bringing along Eric the Owl for photo opportunities.
Orchard Garden’s manager Karen Handley said she hoped the festival would show people what a vibrant place the care home is.
World Rocks against Dementia started in 2016, as a means of bringing communities together and to raise awareness around dementia, with events around the world including the UK, US, Nepal and Kenya.
The Purple Angel movement was founded in 2012 by Norman McNamara who was diagnosed with early-onset dementia at 50. The organisation has 600 ambassadors worldwide who give talks and hold dementia awareness sessions in their local communities.
A recent report by the Alzheimer’s society revealed that were are an estimated 850,000 people living with dementia in the UK, with more than 40,000 under the age of 65 suffering from early-onset dementia.
Tickets are priced at £5 each and are available from Hana Fincher at Orchard Gardens care home on 023 8064 5209.
