THERE IS a new crafty addition to the colourful stampede that is set to sweep across Southampton next summer.

Hobbycraft has thrown its backing behind Marwell's Zany Zebras public art extravaganza that will entertain thousands visiting the city in 2016.

Life-sized zebra sculptures decorated in a range of styles, colours and materials will pop up throughout Southampton in streets and parks to for, a magical trail for residents and tourists to enjoy.

Anne Mainwaring, assistant manager of Hobbycraft Southampton, said: “Our mission is to get the country making, so we’re delighted to be involved in this inspiring event.

"We openly welcome local communities in to our stores to use our making tables as a way to introduce new crafts and skills in a hands-on way - and working with Marwell Zoo allows us to bring this to even more people.”

The dazzle of zebras descending on the city in July next year will follow on from the huge success of the Go! Rhinos event in 2013.

Kirstie Mathieson, project manager of Marwell’s Zany Zebras, added: "Next year our zebra sculptures will be decorated using a whole range of colours, styles and materials which will inspire 100s of 1000s to get creative.

"We are delighted that Hobbycraft have recognised this fantastic opportunity and thrilled to welcome them to the stampede!”

The proceeds from the auction of the sculptures at the end of the ten-week trail through the city will go towards Marwell Wildlife’s work with Grevy’s zebra and other wildlife conservation.
