WARNE Albert Henry
b. 10 December 1919 d. 3 March 2025

Albert (Bert) Warne, father to Diane and Linda, grandfather to Zoe and Melissa, great-grandfather to Henry and Joe will be sadly missed by all, including his friends and neighbours in Bitterne where he has been a pillar of the community for many years.

Bert was born in Cowes on the Isle Of Wight and moved to Southampton when he was 9. He went to school in Woolston and later trained as a shipwright with Camper & Nicholsons at their yacht base in Northam. In WW2 Bert was captured by the Japanese during the fall of Singapore and spent the next 3 ½ years as a prisoner of war. He returned to Southampton in October 1945, resumed his job as a shipwright and married his girlfriend Freda, that he had not seen since early 1941.
Bert has been a very active stalwart in getting proper recognition for the Far East Prisoners Of War (FEPOW) and for all those that fought in South East Asia, which had been widely ignored in Britain. His efforts and the value of his contribution to the memory of those from this area that participated in the Far East was recognised in 2022 when the City of Southampton bestowed their highest accolade, Freeman Of The City Of Southampton on Bert.

Bert passed peacefully on 3rd March at the Countess Mountbatten Hospice in West End, after a very short stay and the family will be eternally grateful to everyone that took part in the care and support of Bert in those last few hours.

Bert’s funeral will take place at Holy Saviour Church Bitterne
at 1pm on 26 March 2025
Everyone is welcome and those attending the church service are invited for refreshments afterwards at
Bitterne Conservative Club in Dean Road.

For those that would like to honour Bert’s work and memory we would suggest a donation to -
