AFTER taking a step too far into the realms of action for most Resident Evil fans, Capcom have taken a step back and created a hybrid to satisfy all.
Resident Evil: Revelations 2 goes back to the series’ roots by splicing the item juggling from the originals with the dynamic character movement and camera handling from recent games.
Series favourite Claire Redfield is back, and has been kidnapped along with Barry Burton’s daughter Moira. The pair are seemingly being used for experiments and must solve puzzles to progress, whilst fighting to survive. Moira offers more of a supporting role, shining light in zombie’s eyes whie Claire hacks at them viciously.
As well as one of the characters being controlled by AI, there’s also the option for local co-op.
Short straw gets Moira!
The episodes switch up by following the progress of series legend Barry Burton and Natalia, a young girl who has no weapon training but can sense danger. Just as before, they can be controlled by AI or by a friend playing on the same console.
Barry and Natalia traverse the same locations as Claire and Moira, but at different times. This leads to the re-exploration of locations changed in some way by the former party’s venturing.
Zombies are mostly quicker than the Resident Evil games of yesteryear, and mange to hide themselves well in shadows and nooks. Getting caught in their grip can be costly and finding ammo to fight them off with happens rarely.
The visuals don’t look particularly polished, yet they’re more than adequate and never hinder the unrelenting dread.
Along with the main story mode is Raid mode, which sees players fending off wave-after-wave of zombie onslaught in a bid to survive. It’s worth the money on its own.
As well as being a solid new chapter in the Resident Evil universe, Revelations 2 is the perfect blend of what makes the series so loved.
All four episodes are available to purchase from the Xbox LIVE Marketplace now
