MUCH discussion has taken place lately of the sudden emergence of cycle lanes in the city.

One of your correspondents attempts to compare the city with countries such as Denmark.

In the last 15 years I have travelled the continent in a campervan covering probably in excess of 40,000 miles.

In Europe generally roads are for vehicles like cars, lorries and buses.

Cycle lanes are totally separate and cover thousands of miles in even the most isolated areas.

Denmark, much of North Germany and Poland is an area devoid of hills.

Denmark has not one spot height on my atlas, not one hill reaching five hundred feet, no comparison even to the Hampshire area.

Southampton refuses to accept the motorist as an entity, a necessity to a viable town centre, driving away the car by reducing parking and increasing parking charges.
