I DO appreciate what Cllr Jaqui Rayment and the city council are planning for an easier life for the cyclist ('Cycling city' Echo, May 9), but I wonder just how they intend to do this.

The state of our roads in the city are death traps for not only cyclist but cars as well, with so many large pot holes.

Many of our roads are also too narrow to put in cycle lanes, others like Shirley High Street are suicidal for the cyclist at most times.

I do hope when all these measures are taken up, they enforce all cyclists to have bells fitted, as for the moment I am fed up with being nearly mown down by the silent death machine called a cycle whose riders feel the pavement is a personal race track.
