IN THIS last week of campaigning for the local elections, can I appeal to city councillors to abandon ‘vanity projects’ and concentrate on local priorities?
Huge sums of money have been wasted by overspends on ‘Sea City’ (Conservatives) and the ‘Arts Quarter’ (Labour). Now a new drain on local resources is proposed with ‘City of Culture 2025’.
What about investments in innovative local projects to:
Deliver effective and prompt hospital discharge for older people.
Re-establish ‘surestart’ support for under 5s.
Support teenagers with mental health problems.
Establish community transport schemes to reduce pollution and challenge the bus companies’ monopoly.
The city needs imaginative councillors who will rebuild community cohesion with imagination and courage.
