AN ELDERLY man is fighting for his life after falling from his bike on the A35 near Bere Regis.

A call was made to Dorset Police by a member of the public at 11.53am, who said a cyclist had appeared to have fallen from his bike.

It is not yet known if another vehicle was involved.

However, police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision, which involved an 85-year-old man from Dorchester.

The A35 was closed both ways for around four hours near the roundabout between West Street and Sugar Hill (Woodbury Cross) while officers investigated the scene.

The air ambulance was mobilised but later stood down, according to a spokesperson for the South Western Ambulance Service.

They confirmed a male casualty was taken by paramedics to Poole Hospital with a number of injuries, including facial injuries and possible head injuries.

A police spokesperson said it was "unconfirmed" whether the cyclist had fallen off as a result of a collision or not.

The road has now reopened after a four hour closure.

A spokesperson from Dorset Police said: "An 85-year-old male cyclist was seriously injured when he fell from his cycle on the A35 near Bere Regis just before midday on Saturday, February 27.

"The male was admitted to Poole Hospital for treatment and remains there.

"His family are aware."
