SAINTS youngster Olufela Olomola has joined League One outfit Scunthorpe on a free transfer.

The 20-year-old signs a three-year deal at Glanford Park, departing St Mary's after four years.

Olomola made one first-team appearance for Saints, coming on for an injured Jay Rodriguez in the first-half of a League Cup victory over Sunderland at St Mary's in October 2016.

The former Arsenal youth team man, who was born in London and came to the south coast in 2014, has previously had experience of playing in the Football League, having netted seven goals for League Two Yeovil Town in 28 games on loan last term.

"It’s been good. Southampton is an amazing club and they’re good with young players," he said, reflecting on his time at Saints.

"They’ve helped me a lot in my development so far and I owe them a lot.

"Now I’m at Scunthorpe, I want to come in and show everyone what I can do.

"This is a great platform for me to show the world what I can do on a first team stage, so I’m raring to go."

On joining The Iron, he said: "I’m absolutely delighted to get it done.

"This has been something that I’ve wanted to get done for a while now and I’m raring to go.

"I just want to show everyone what I can do.

"The club contacted Southampton about me and as soon as I heard Scunthorpe was interested in me, I wanted to get it done."

Olomola was a bright prospect at Staplewood and first found himself on the edge of the first team in 2015/16 as an 18-year-old.

Ronald Koeman named him on the bench in a 1-1 draw with Sunderland and said: “He’s a young talent showing a good shape in the Under 21s."

After Koeman's departure, Claude Puel also saw potential and gave him his debut in the League Cup before putting him on the bench in Premier League matches against Chelsea and Leicester as well as in the Europa League against Hapoel Be’er Sheva.

That little spell in 2016 was the end of Olomola's association with the first-team.

However, he continued to turn out for the under-23s prior to a move to Yeovil in July 2017.

He ended this season by winning the Southampton Senior Cup with the under-23s.

Olomola was released last week and wasted no time in finding a new club, heading to Scunthorpe.

On Instragam, he wrote: "After 4 amazing years at @Southampton its (sic) time for me to move on. Thank you to all the players and staff for your support I will miss you all."
