THE finishing touches of a deal to bring Mark Hughes to Saints on a permanent basis are being completed.

The Daily Echo understands Saints are nearly in a position to announce Hughes, who led the club to Premier League safety, as their new manager.

It is understood an announcement could be made as early as this week.

The experienced Welshman is said to have finished all talks with the St Mary's hierarchy and it's now only a matter of time before he is revealed.

Hughes was brought in as Mauricio Pellegrino's replacement in March charged with leading Saints to safety on a short-term deal.

The former Stoke boss achieved that and the club wasted no time in trying to sign Hughes up to a permanent contract, entering talks immediately after the Premier League campaign finished.

Chairman Ralph Krueger labelled Hughes and his assistants Mark Bowen and Eddie Niedzwiecki as a 'perfect fit' for Saints.
