ORIOL Romeu revealed Swansea’s attempts to ‘screw’ with Saints only made Mark Hughes’ men more motivated to beat them at the Liberty Stadium.

Saints’ preparations for the relegation decider were disrupted when they were forced to change hotels, after the Marriott in Swansea cancelled their booking at short notice due to a ‘virus’, writes Peter Howard.

Not only that but the local police could not escort Saints from their new digs in the Vale of Glamorgan through rush hour traffic ahead of the huge relegation battle.

It didn’t end there with Saints asked to wait for 25 minutes on the coach to allow Swansea’s team bus to unload on arrival at the Liberty Stadium.

Manager Hughes was having none of that, though, and marched his side straight into the ground without delay before they defeated the Swans 1-0 through a Manolo Gabbiadini goal.

“In fact, I think that motivates us more. They tried to screw us around and that’s their problem,” Romeu said.

“We were coming here to win and we believed in our quality. We knew it was going to be hard and it was going to be a battle and they tried to push the atmosphere into their way.

“But as soon as we scored everything was more quiet, everything changed. We knew that was going to happen, so luckily we could score.”

Romeu admits Saints played with their heads and their hearts in the victory which virtually secured Premier League safety for another season.

“It’s hard to explain. We know we’ve been doing things well recently but today was another type of game – it meant everything,” he said.

“You need to play with your head but also your heart and we did both things.

“We were there to score the goal and we did better than we have done the previous times.

“It’s amazing to win after all this tension we have had in the whole season and now it feels so good.

“We still have one more game, one more chance to give our fans a happy day but today was amazing.

“The feelings we had out there were just unbelievable.”
