Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez says he will make a late decision on the fitness of Jonjo Shelvey ahead of Saturday's match against Saints
The former Liverpool and Swansea man missed last week's defeat at Anfield with a knee injury but could be in consideration to face the Saints at St James' Park.
Benitez, who confirmed his squad would travel to his native Spain for a training camp next week, said: "Jonjo Shelvey has been training. We have to be careful with him and decide tomorrow.
"[Striker] Islam Slimani is doing better (in his recovery from a thigh problem). Rob Elliot [back] is out and Jesus Gamez [ankle] is not available."
Provisional squad: Darlow, Dubravka, Yedlin, Manquillo, Dummett, Haidara, Lascelles, Clark, Mbemba, Shelvey, Merino, Hayden, Ritchie, Atsu, Murphy, Diame, Kenedy, Perez, Joselu, Gayle.
