TROJANS’ bid to qualify for next month’s England Hockey indoor Super Sixes league ended with a South League regional semi-final defeat by Teddington at Fleming Park.

They lost 4-1 to the Middlesex club, who will join Guildford playing against Fareham in South Division 2 at Eastleigh over the weekend January 9 and 10 2016, writes Mike Vimpany.

Trojans lost their opening match 2-1 to Guildford, but impressive wins over Marlow (4-1) and Milton Keynes (6-0) earned them a semi-final slot.

Rich Aves (3), Ian Bassett (2), Chris Gittens (2), Ben Frost (2) and Callum Crichton were on target for Trojans.

Winchester came in with a late wild card entry, fielding the bulk of their youth side which has reached next month’s Boys Under-18 indoor finals in Nottingham.

They lost all three group matches, but club officials considered the experience of playing against leading indoor players was invaluable for the youngsters’ development.

• Alex Danson and the rest of the GB women’s hockey squad have been handed a tough draw at next summer’s Rio Olympics.

They have been drawn in a competitive Pool B alongside Argentina, ranked second in the world, Australia (3rd), Japan, India and the United States.

Team GB are currently ranked seventh in the world.

The full match schedule for pool fixtures and the competition’s play-off stages will be confirmed in February.

Southampton-born Danson will be competing in her third Olympics.

After appearing in Beijing in 2008, she was part of the team that won bronze four years later in London.

Danson made her international debut way back in 2001, but GB failed to qualify for the 2004 Athens Olympics.

The former Trojans colt recently won her 250th international cap.

The GB men’s team, who are fourth in the rankings, have been drawn in Pool A against world number one and reigning world and Hockey World League champions Australia, tournament hosts Brazil and Belgium, New Zealand and Spain.

Ireland have also qualified for the men’s competition and are in Pool B against the Netherlands, Germany, Argentina, India and Canada.
