SALISBURY have confirmed that manager Steve Claridge will lead the club into the Southern League South (Premier) next season.

Claridge’s name had been linked with the vacancy at Woking, but that job has now been filled by Alan Dowson from Hampton & Richmond Borough.

Salisbury chairman Ian Hammond announced: “I am delighted to say that, in spite of all the speculation, Steve Claridge will remain as manager and a director of the club on its journey to a level which is more in line with where it should be.

“I had a very encouraging meeting with Steve over a week ago at which he confirmed his intentions, but speculation continued until Woking FC finally appointed their new manager.

"As far as the club is concerned, I hope Steve will continue to develop the side and am content that, with the club’s current financial position, he will have the necessary tools.”

Claridge, who guided the Whites to the second automatic promotion place in the Evo-Stik South West last term, added: “Obviously there has been a lot of speculation about my possible involvement in relation to the manager’s post at Woking FC.

"But, being in the middle of a project here at Salisbury, I am pleased to confirm that I intend to continue my best efforts to make progress with the club, which I made clear at my meeting with the chairman, and welcome the opportunity to do so.

“This club is in a strong financial position and I believe we will be able hold our own in our new surroundings before being able to push for the next level."

Warning against expecting too much, too soon, Claridge added: “The Southern Premier League is another step along the way and sensible progress may not produce immediate results.

"Our aim next season will at least be to consolidate but, saying that, if things go well then we’ll do our best to finish as high as possible and hopefully surprise a few.

“I hope our fans will keep supporting the club, as they have always done, as, without a team effort from all, it will be very difficult to succeed.

“Next season promises to be very exciting and I hope they enjoy the ride.“
