SYDENHAMS Premier outfit Newport IW have received the green light to move to a new ground.

Plans have been approved by the Isle of Wight Council’s planning committee for Port to relocate to land near the Racecourse roundabout.

The proposals submitted by South Coast Leisure, owners of the club’s St George’s Park home, include a floodlit pitch, main stand and clubhouse, plus function room facilities.

Peter Westhorpe, secretary of the Newport IW FC Supporters’ Society, said: “This is the ideal location for the ground and the proposed facilities are exactly the right specification for our current use and future aspirations.

“The site is close to Newport, is easily accessible, and will provide us with a modern, low maintenance facility which will allow us to prosper.”

The club, meanwhile, are seeking applications for the first and second-team managers’ posts for next season.

Derek Ohren, who recently returned as boss, is only in place until the end of the season and the long-serving John Linington is stepping down as reserve team manager but will continue to play an active role within the club.

It’s been a tough season for Newport on the pitch but late first-half goals by Jared Wetherick and Darren Powell secured a 2-1 home win over Bournemouth Poppies on Saturday.

Okomo Kulisewa replied on 72 minutes in between his Poppies’ teammates Chia Khider and Ali Falkhal being sent off.
