WINCHESTER City’s defenders earned a special pat on the back from manager Craig Davis following yesterday’s 2-0 home win over Cinderford Town.

City turned in what Davis described as a “solid performance” as a goal in each half from Liam Gilbert and Pat Cox proved enough to secure all three Evo-Stik South West points at a drizzly Simplyhealth City Ground.

Picking out Josh Harfield and Joe Cook for special praise, Davis said: “We were threatening going forward and solid as a rock at the back. Josh and Joe were absolutely brilliant.

“Our defending has been much maligned by people and I’ve been critical of it at times, but Cinderford only had one shot either on or off target in the second half and, bearing in mind they were chasing the game, that’s really good from us.

“We’re happy with our week’s work, getting into the semi-finals of the Hampshire Senior Cup and sitting in a healthy position (sixth) in the league.”

Winchester took the lead after 13 minutes after Cinderford keeper Joe Perry had tipped over Liam Gilbert’s effort.

Gilbert got his revenge from Rob Carr’s resulting corner, heading home for 1-0.

That tally was doubled shortly after the hour, again from a flag kick. This time the ball was kept alive by Harfield, Oli Bailey crossed and strike partner Cox supplied the finish.

A 30-minute stoppage followed because of a serious injury to Cinderford’s Dan Clare.

He over-extended his leg reaching for the ball and his knee went the other way, damaging the anterior cruciate ligament.

“It was a shame for the lad,” said Davis. “But everyone rallied round to look after him and provided him with cover (while an ambulance was called).

“I was proud of the efforts of all at our club, including medical staff and other staff as well as the committee etc, to get him looked after.

“We all wish him the very best and hope he is back playing soon.”

Winchester’s thoughts now turn to two testing away games at Kidlington on Wednesday and at Mangotsfield United on Saturday.

“Kidlington have beaten us twice already this season and they’re a good side,” warned Davis. “They’ve gone slightly under the radar, but they’re in the top 12 and in with a shout.”
