EASTLEIGH waited an eternity for a win – and now, just like buses, two have come along at once.

Boosted by last Tuesday’s terrific, late 2-1 turnaround against Dover Athletic, the Spitfires this afternoon dented the hopes of another play-off chasing side when they came away worthy 2-0 victors from Aldershot Town.

The outstanding Chris Zebroski broke the deadlock shortly before half-time with his ninth of the season and, with just over an hour gone, strike partner Paul McCallum weighed in with his third goal in two games.

To put the icing on the Spitfires’ celebration cake, there was a late appearance off the bench for crowd favourite Michael Green after a long spell out with ankle problems.

Roared on by 172 hardy travelling fans in a 2,853 Easter Monday crowd, Eastleigh looked up for it from the off.

There was a ninth-minute scare when Shots’ Matt McClure went down while trying to take the ball round goalkeeper Graham Stack, but referee David Rock promptly booked McClure for diving and awarded the free-kick Eastleigh’s way.

Apart from a couple of lapses in concentration, the Spitfires were comfortable against their lofty county rivals and were good value for their 43rd-minute lead.

Cav Miley’s defensive block set them on the counter-attack and, after an initial cross had come back to Mark Yeates, he played the ball in for powerhouse Zebroski to divert home with his head.

Both sides had chances early in the second half – defender Andrew Boyce glancing a header wide for Eastleigh – before former Leyton Orient man McCallum continued his rich vein of scoring form.

Miley again won a tackle, Ryan Broom released Zebroski on the right and the big man stood up a fantastic cross for McCallum to head home.

McCallum almost struck again when Yeates’s shot was spilled, but the ball rebounded off keeper Lewis Ward’s legs.

As the Shots rallied, Shamir Fenelon drilled across goal and wide of the far post and sub James Rowe missed a sitter, but Eastleigh held firm for the three points, lifting them to 12th.

It sets the scene nicely for fourth-placed Wrexham’s Silverlake visit on Saturday (3pm).
