AFC TOTTON 2 DIDCOT TOWN 1.

AFC TOTTON upset the form book as goals by Tony Lee and Alfy Whittingham sent Didcot Town packing 2-1 at the Total Branding Community Stadium this afternoon.

It was the Stags’ first win in four Evo-Stik South West matches and ended a run of four straight league victories for the Railwaymen.

Both sides took time to settle on a bright and breezy afternoon and it took nine minutes for the first shot to arrive – Totton’s Toby Adekunle firing a hopeful effort over from distance.

The Stags kept going with a determined run and cross from Craig Feeney eventually resulting in a foul on Jack Masterton just outside the box.

Former Eastleigh striker LEE stepped up to take the free-kick and, cool as you like, beat stationary keeper Leigh Bedwell with the crispest of strikes for 1-0.

It was Lee’s first Stags goal since re-joining the club on loan from Poole Town.

Didcot had the opportunity to do likewise on 21-minutes when Whittingham was penalised for a foul about two yards outside the Totton area.

But George Reid went for power rather than precision and his firm, low strike was smartly beaten away by Totton keeper Shane Murphy.

Totton responded with a succession of corners, one of which came back to the taker, Masterton. He swung a terrific ball into the six-yard box, but Lee was pulled up for an overly strong challenge on the keeper.

The Stags were playing with a hunger and desire that third-placed Didcot were finding it hard to live with and they deservedly scored a second in the 26th minute.

Lee was this time the architect, cutting in from the right and muscling past defender Stuart Cattell. His delivery sparked panic in the visitors’ area and WHITTINGHAM was on hand to slide home.

Dazed Didcot were lucky not to concede a third moments afterwards, but Lee slammed a first-time shot just wide.

On 43 minutes Totton had a good shout for a penalty.

Lee found Feeney inside the box and the Stags No 9 appeared to be shoved over by Didcot skipper Adam Learoyd, but, to the dismay of the home crowd, nothing was given.

Half-time: AFC TOTTON 2 DIDCOT TOWN 0.

Didcot upped their game after the break and took little more than three minutes to slice Totton’s lead in half.

A ball through the middle found Brazilian striker Felipe Barcelos one-on-one with Murphy and, although the Totton keeper got a hand to it, his shot carried enough power to find the net.

In a complete reversal of the first-half, Totton were now on the back foot and there was relief all round when Didcot sub Seph Humphries’ driven cross missed everyone as it flashed across the goal-face.

Lee, who had just gone into the book along with Didcot’s Learoyd, then got a stern lecture after challenging the 'keeper once again.

Totton played safety first, withdrawing the striker on 73 minutes and sending on Nimes Pina. Whittingham was then replaced by Pip Nolan.

The interruptions almost worked in Totton’s favour when Adekunle caught the visitors napping with a driving run, but powered his shot wide of the far post.

With the game and the atmosphere growing increasingly spicy, Totton’s Callum Chugg and Humphries of Didcot were cautioned for fouls, quickly followed by the Stags' Charlie Gunson.

The countless stoppages at least upset Didcot’s flow, allowing Totton to ride out a scrappy, ill-tempered finale and bank three vital points.
